cjwalker (2K)The Madam C. J. Walker

In 1915, She Earned a Thousand Dollars a Day!

"I got my start, by giving myself a start."

These are the words of the first female millionaire in the United States history, Madam C. J. Walker. Are you familiar with this woman? Let me share with you her story. Just the thought of it inspires me.

If you don't know, the first female millionaire is a woman of color, who pulled herself out of the cotton fields of the south, of Delta, Mississippi. Her birth name is Sarah Breedlove, but her branded name is Madam C. J. Walker. Madam Walker at a young age married and widowed, with a daughter.

Madam Walker built a successful business that leaves a legacy, history, inspiration for decades to come.

Too many people complain of why they "can't" achieve success in this extraordinary information age. Madam C. J. Walker's millionaire status hit the history books, 1915. Yes, the year was 1915.

Madam Walker built her wealth and success on several key principles.

  1. Product - Her product of hair preparations and hair goods exploded worldwide. She knew her market, African American women needed and would desire to fix their, as one of her employees stated, "unruly hair".

  2. Passion - Madam Walker's passion was evident to be of value to her people. She believed in what she desired and Madam Walker built on it constantly. She traveled all over the country selling and educating the world of her products and services.

  3. Philanthropy - Madam C. J. Walker gave kindly to assist others. It's recorded that she's the first African American philanthropist. She assisted in the birth of Bethune-Cookman College, by donating monies to Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. As she built wealth, she gave back consistently.

  4. Persistence - She didn't allow the period of segregation or lynching to deter her dream. There's a must see documentary titled, "Two Dollars and a Dream". In the early 1900s it was unheard of that a woman of color to earn so much wealth and influence in such a trying and complex time of history.

  5. Power - To build her power and strength she created this through master- minding with those who were stronger and more knowledgeable in her weak areas. Madam Walker's team within her business generated mind-blowing power that exploded her success.

  6. Plan - The plan Madam C. J. Walker executed took place over a 5 year period. The actions she took of planting a factory in Indiana, allowed her prosperity to have an estate built in New York. She is surely a stepping stone for a successful plan.

Madam C. J. Walker is a true inspiration to me. She truly created a legacy and purpose for all to mirror. Her drive and passion created wonders of wealth.
