Religious Division: Segregation Amongst OurselvesBy Jeremiah Camara Malcolm X once said, "the most segregated hour in America is high-noon Sunday morning." Of course, Brother Malcolm was referring to the segregation between the races. High noon on Sundays, unfortunately, finds the vast majority of Black people segregated amongst themselves. It seems as though there is a church on every corner, each possessing a different name and denomination. Churches such as Methodist, Episcopalian, Non-denominational, Holiness/Pentecostal, Kingdom Hall, Baptist, Seven Day Adventist, etc, dot our communities in every major city in the United States. Ironically, each sect claims to have the "proper" teaching. How did a former enslaved people, in desperate need of unity, manage to become so religiously segregated? "Rarely, do we see Muslims and Methodists, Witnesses and Adventists, or non-religious and religious Black people collaborating in business ventures together" states Jeremiah Camara, creator of the DVD Blind Belief: How Religion Divides the Black Community and author of the highly acclaimed book Holy Lockdown: Does the Church Limit Black Progress? Camara adds that "considering the desperate times Black people are currently facing, we cannot afford to allow religious doctrines and rituals stand in the way of our group progress. We must have religion with reason and be as concerned with our collective salvation as we are with our so-called individual salvation. We must produce commensurate to our praise." Blind Belief was recorded live in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Bookstore. Camara takes a critical look at not only the Black church but also Christian fundamentalism as it relates to the psychology of Blacks. Through visual examples, Camara helps us to recognize our religious fallacies. This powerful presentation explains the origin of our many beliefs and doctrines, of which most Black people are unaware. Camara maintains that religion is not only the transport system into the psychology of the people but is also the greatest divisive element within the Black Community. About the author: Jeremiah Camara has studied the idioms, language, and culture of predominately Black churches for over a decade. Mr. Camara has lectured all over the United States. He has also been a guest on several radio talk shows, including The Michael Baisden Show, The Tom Pope Show, Lib Radio, and The Power. For more information, please visit www.holylockdown.com
