Lament of "The D"
By Rev. Reynard N. Blake, Jr
(June 2005)
An urban asylum of the damned
Damned not by God, but by man
Churches all around and churches nowhere
Churches in 'hoods of despair
Trying to save the lost
Trying to heal believers
Using government grants
Hanging with deceivers
Some churches are doing well
Most people are catching hell
Suburban vampires
Sucking the life out of The D
Knowing good and well it needs a green transfusion
Yet they come down from their perches
To see the Red Wings
They consider Detroit an urban jungle
But go to the Detroit Zoo and The Fox Theater
And come to pet the Lions and Tigers
Oh My!
And when those they consider 'hood rats
Come to their mall lairs
They cringe
But are willing to accept their cash and credit cards
"Just be out by 9" they say
Because these vampires have bats
And are willing to use them
They make sure those rats get in their cars
'Cause they have no problem shooting nig-gars
And, ain't it funny
That those that immigrated from afar
Believed the same things that vamps thought of nig-gars
But 9/11 made the vamps figure
"Oh, we got some bigger niggers"
Imagine that!
How does it feel like to be a 'hood rat?
And now, to leadership
It's hard to keep this ship from sinking
But what were they thinking
During a night of expensive drinking?
To woo investors?
Or protect the vested?
Pray the parties worked
So the monies will flow
Because Detroit can't be saved
By All-Star games or a Super Bowl
True, these events will increase exposure
But will Detroit be exposed
As a place of dreams deferred
Or, a city of lost souls?
