Healing Herbs: An Afro Health Series


Trust for the American Medical system should be in question by Black Americans, seeing their past with experimentation on various communities of people. Currently, growing numbers of people are becoming dependant upon drug assistance programs to sustain their health ailments; in short, Americans are becoming drugs addicts.

Before the growth of the American Medical Association, and even America itself, cultures of people trusted in the earth for healing. The earth produces chemically sufficient herbs that interact with the human anatomy to prevent disease, sickness, and other health problems.

Afromerica will begin a series on the herbs of the earth that we see and use everyday. If used for the treatment and purpose of self-healing alongside faith in the natural resources of God, many people can avoid becoming drug addicts, dependant on American medicine. Below are descriptions of many herbs taken from a reliable source - documented at the bottom of the page.

These are simple preventative health remedies that all Americans should take into consideration, especially Black Americans. If used correctly and regularly, we can avoid many of the diseases that American medicine has attributed to the Black gene.


green teaGreen Tea

Green Tea, an ancient beverage, was long believed to provide natural antioxidant protection and both promote longevity & renew vitality. Scientists now know that this historical herb possesses tremendous antioxidant activity. Green Tea contains powerful antioxidant compounds, called polyphenols, that protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.

According to Chinese legend, tea was discovered accidentally by an emperor 4,000 years ago. Since then, traditional Chinese medicine has recommended Green Tea for headaches, body aches & pains, digestion, depression, immune enhancement, detoxification, as an energizer, and to prolong life.

Modern research has confirmed many of these health benefits. All teas (green, black, and oolong) are derived from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The difference is in 'how' the plucked leaves are prepared. The tea plant has long been cultivated in China. It is an evergreen shrub or tree that can grow to a height of 30 feet, but is usually maintained at a height

The hairy leaves of the tea plant are used both as a social and medicinal beverage. Green Tea, unlike black and oolong tea, is not fermented, so the active constituents remain unaltered in the herb. It is produced by lightly steaming the fresh cut leaf. Green Tea is very high in polyphenols with potent antioxidant and anti-cancer support properties.

Green Tea contains volatile oils, vitamins, minerals, and caffeine, but the active constituents are the polyphenols, particularly the catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These polyphenols are believed to be responsible for most of Green Tea's roles in promoting good health.

Research demonstrates that Green Tea guards against cardiovascular disease in many ways. Green Tea lowers total cholesterol levels and improves the cholesterol profile (the ratio of LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol), reduces platelet aggregation, and lowers blood pressure.

The polyphenols in Green Tea have also been shown to support a lower risk of several types of cancers, such as cancer of the rectum, gallbladder, and endometrium.
