Healing Herbs: An Afro Health Series
Before the growth of the American Medical Association, and even America itself, cultures of people trusted in the earth for healing. The earth produces chemically sufficient herbs that interact with the human anatomy to prevent disease, sickness, and other health problems. Afromerica will begin a series on the herbs of the earth that we see and use everyday. If used for the treatment and purpose of self-healing alongside faith in the natural resources of God, many people can avoid becoming drug addicts, dependant on American medicine. Below are descriptions of many herbs taken from a reliable source - documented at the bottom of the page. Please research the source for yourself before taking any medical advice from this series. These are simple preventative health remedies that all Americans should take into consideration, especially Black Americans. If used correctly and regularly, we can avoid many of the diseases that American medicine has attributed to the Black gene.
Curry is a blend of herbs & spices having a warm, rich, earthy aroma. Curry powder varies greatly around the world in both ingredients and taste. This spicy culinary favorite is considered a marvelous tonic and stomachic. Though not technically considered medicinal, many believe the natural constituents of the various ingredients in Curry provide essential elements to good health and long life. Curry is a traditional herbal blend, typically a combination of several ground spices. Though the exact ingredients vary widely from region to region, this Curry blend is a proprietary mix of Allspice, Cinnamon, Cloves, Coriander, Cumin Seed, Fenugreek Seed, Ginger Root, Mustard Seed, Nutmeg, Turmeric, and Capsicum (red pepper). Curry powder typically has a rich, earthy, and pungent flavor with many citrus-like overtones. The word "curry" descended from the Tamil word "kari", which is the name that they used for their spicy sauce. Curries can be found in various Asian countries, including India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Curry differs greatly, depending on region, in both taste and content. And, of course, each chef adds their own individual style & touch to each meal. Contrary to some beliefs, Curry is not always "hot". In fact, there are some mild Curry recipes designed to balance the blend of the various herbs & spices, some of which have a distinctly delicate and highly sophisticated taste. In India, for example, this contrast is demonstrated in the difference between the hot vindaloo & Madras curries, and the mild kormas curry. Note: The herbal blend "Curry" should not be confused for the plant known as "Curry" (Helichrysum italiacum), which is popular for its scented foliage. This plant is native to Turkey and grows on the sunny slopes there. Typically grown in small containers, this tender perennial herb is related to the strawflower, and it bears attractive golden-yellow flowers. Its name comes from the natural curry-spice aroma from its leaves. The English use the plant "Curry" in cream cheese for sandwiches, and in egg & chicken salads. And its essential oils are sometimes used in alternative medicines. Source from: http://www.viableherbalsolutions.com/singles/singles.htm © June 2005 by Afro Staff
