Healing Herbs: An Afro Health Series
Before the growth of the American Medical Association, and even America itself, cultures of people trusted in the earth for healing. The earth produces chemically sufficient herbs that interact with the human anatomy to prevent disease, sickness, and other health problems. Afromerica will begin a series on the herbs of the earth that we see and use everyday. If used for the treatment and purpose of self-healing alongside faith in the natural resources of God, many people can avoid becoming drug addicts, dependant on American medicine. Below are descriptions of many herbs taken from a reliable source - documented at the bottom of the page. Please research the source for yourself before taking any medical advice from this series. These are simple preventative health remedies that all Americans should take into consideration, especially Black Americans. If used correctly and regularly, we can avoid many of the diseases that American medicine has attributed to the Black gene.
Cocoa comes from the plant Theobroma cacao, a small tree typically 20-30 feet tall native to South America. This herb is now cultivated in many hot climate areas around the globe, particularly in West Africa. The latest developments in chocolate research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), include two clinical studies suggesting that the flavanols found in Cocoa has positive effects on vascular health. Additionally, chocolate, perhaps the world's favorite confection contains chemicals like those found in Red Wine, Grape Seed, and Green Tea that can help improve blood circulation, cut blood pressure, and provides numerous other health benefits. And, it just taste so darn good. Over the past decade, researchers have come to see the relationship between consuming more flavonoids and lowering the death rate from heart disease. Researchers have found that study participants who consumed high-flavanol Cocoa demonstrated increased flow-mediation dilation (FMD), which peaked 2 hours post-consumption (compared to the control group). Recent studies now confirm that flavonoids, such as those in Cocoa, support heart health by decreasing oxidation of LDL cholesterol, decrease the body's inflammatory immune responses, improve the ability of arteries to dilate, and inhibits that aggregation of platelets in the bloodstream. And Cocoa is one of the richest flavonoid-contained foods currently available. The principal flavonoids found, epicatechin and catechin, are believed to be responsible for the health benefit. In fact, Cocoa is also believed to surpass both Green Tea and Garlic as a protective antioxidant food. Source from: http://www.viableherbalsolutions.com/singles/singles.htm © 2005 by Afro Staff
