Your Government FDA: Federal Deranged Asylum
Recent studies confirm that grocery stores in lower-income Black neighborhoods offer less health food options than stores in more affluent, mostly white communities, making it more challenging for Blacks to maintain a normal weight and live a healthy lifestyle.........[more]
With the low carbohydrate diets being all the rage right now, there are some important nutrients that are being missed because people are mistakenly cutting out all forms of carbohydrates. It's good that people are finally learning the evils of white bread, white flour products, and processed foods, because those type products do nothing for your health. Why process an apple to make apple sauce and in that process strip away all the important nutrients and then fortify it by adding them back again........[more]
The Mediterranean diet is associated with longer life and reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. It's a diet based on whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, minimal animal and trans-fat, and little red meat......[more]
Healthy Foods to Eat Each Day An article in the January issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource offers some clues. Here are a few of the experts' picks for favorite foods and why they recommend them:.....[more]
"Value marketing has confused Americans about what a normal and appropriate portion of food should look like." "Foreigners coming to this country express amazement at the amounts of food heaped on American plates. Food adopted from foreign cuisines, such as the croissant, bagel or quesadilla, double or triple in size when they reach our shores. Even the traditional American muffin has ballooned from a standard 1-1/2 ounces to as large as 8 ounces." U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics show that the average daily caloric intake of Americans has risen from 1,854 calories to 2,002 calories during the last 20 years. That increase - 148 calories per day - theoretically works out to an extra 15 pounds per year.

The new low-carb Atkins diet has forced grocery stores and fast food places to change their menu to certify another cultural trend sweeping the country. And in light of the child obesity crises (another cultural taboo), the Atkins advocates are encouraging schools to adopt the diet plan for the school lunch program........[more]
Given that eating behavior is influenced by both biological and social factors, determining the causes of obesity has proven to be a challenging task. Researchers have followed several paths.......[more]
Sensible weight management begins with being aware of social pressures toward unattainable goals and not succumbing to advertising and fashion trends. No calorie restricting weight-loss program has ever been shown to be effective over the medium-to-long term, regardless of advertising claims to the contrary......[more]
No longer is it socially acceptable to publicly humiliate Black people, or put women in their place - barefoot and pregnant; or question the homosexual's ways, but its OK to harass smokers and fat people. Who are these browbeaters who are not satisfied unless they have someone to make fun of?......[more]
Indexes of desirable body weight are given in tables of "ideal weight for height" issued by both government agencies and insurance companies and are based on statistics for longevity and the body mass index [BMI], which is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by his or her height in meters squared. Studies show that good health is associated with weighting no more than 5% below or 20% (for men) and 30% (for women) above the weight-for-height standards, or having a BMI between 19 and 25. Above the upper limits of these measures, people have higher risk for diabetes, gallbladder disease, varicose veins, arthritis, heart disease, stoke, high blood pressure, breathing problems, and accident proneness (because of a large body). People who are extremely overweight often face stigmas, such as job discrimination, lower social acceptance, and lower self-esteem.......How much should YOU weigh?
[By Jane Mountrose] As a person with a long history of dieting and failing, I can tell you that diets don't work. The reason is simple. They don't consider the fact that we are human beings with complex needs and desires, as well as an inner wisdom that can guide us to know what we really need.....[more]
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, weight-loss methods that rely on fad diets and diet aids such as drinks, prepackaged foods or diet pills don't work in the long run. Diets that prohibit or severely restrict whole food groups are also dicey, one nutritionist says. "One-food diets? No way," she says. They lead inevitably to boredom and some kind of nutritional deficiency, she says. Low-carb, high-protein weight loss plans such as Dr.Atkins' New Diet Revolution, The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, Protein Power, and Sugar Busters, may take credit for helping people to drop weight quickly, but critics contend they do not help people keep weight off and they prohibit or severely restrict consumption of whole categories of foods, such as grains, cereals, vegetables and fruit. Furthermore, low-carb, high-protein diets emphasize foods from animals, which means you get more total fat, more saturated fat, and more cholesterol each day, a combination that may raise your risk of cardiovascular disease. Of course, being obese also raises your risk of cardiovascular disease, but the point is there are healthier ways to lose weight. Finally, you should know that any sensible weight-control plan includes exercise. Exercise not only helps to burn calories, but it builds muscles and lowers blood pressure. According to experts, the number one predictor for long-term weight control is exercise. Source from http://www.healthatoz.com/
