Negroes With Guns

Outspoken and Feared but Largely Forgotten
By Felicia R. Lee
Submission by T. Duffy

In Case You Missed It

"Negroes With Guns," a 1962 manifesto about a group battling the Klan and other white terrorists in Monroe, N.C., is still a compelling title. But the story of its author, Robert F. Williams, has gathered dust. Once one of the most feared men in the country, he was an architect of the modern black power movement and symbolized a century-long debate among blacks about the need to meet violence with violence....[more]

Afro Heat

You recall that moment when Kunta Kinte could not stand those chains on him and he had struggled hard and long to throw them off? And at about the time he was able to free himself from the chains, Fiddler had walked in the slave quarters......[more]

Whites have monopolized many outlets, which allow them to influence the minds of the general public. The most powerful of these conglomerate forces is the media. Through television shows, songs on the radio, movies in theaters, and subversive articles in magazines or newspapers, images of white supremacy have been embedded into the psyches of American residents.......[more]

African American Art
By Richard Powell (excerpted from AFRICANA: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AFRICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, SECOND EDITION.
Edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Kwame Anthony Appiah. (Oxford University Press; April 2005)
Submitted By Yolanda Carden, Publicist

Painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and crafts developed by people of African descent in the United States and thematically and stylistically informed by African American culture. The term African American art means different things to different people. For some the term designates a largely racial phenomenon, describing all artistic products-paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, crafts, architecture, etc.-created by North Americans of African descent. For others the preceding definition fails to take into account the cultural, in addition to the racial, implications of the term.......[more]

By Michael Angier

Auguste Rodin's classic statue "The Thinker" is one of my favorites. It's hard to look at it (or one of its many replicas) without being moved by it. The innocent display of someone deeply in thought causes most of us to ponder a bit ourselves. Why is this image so captivating? What's he thinking about?......[more]

We Spend Money on What?

Despite being the nations most consumptuous group of people, the things we buy the most give evidence on what captures our interest the most. The question comes down to "What do you spend your extra money on?" After an extensive study on the spending habits of Blacks on America, researchers found that Blacks spend the bulk of their extra earnings on products of looking good and feeling good......[more]

What do we do with our Spare Time?

Leisure time is a tell-all about the mental and physical state of America. We (as in you and I) will share with one another the things we like to do to determine just what people are doing these days. We will also make suggestions about what activities are beneficial and what activities are simply time-wasters.

There was a study that suggested that when Blacks have extra money, we prefer to spend it on movies, music, and food as opposed to whites, who spend extra money on more outdoor activities. Is this accurate? Actually, it all depends on how much a person makes, what side of town they live on, and how much education they have.

Stay tuned to this forum because it is going to get exciting.
