THE OPEN MIND

Nothing Learned, Nothing Gained
By T. Duffy

If I remember correctly, there is nothing in any of the messages of the late Martin Luther King junior, or prior activists before or during the civil rights movement, that said freedom is the opportunity for blacks to whine.

With 300 hundred plus years in this country and now the largest so-called minority, it's time to stand up and be counted. During the last election, blacks were not only whining, but hoping their votes would help to elect someone who would continue nickel and diming them for another 4 years, as they believed the president many now call a white brother. But the results left many disappointed and exploited.

The freedom to vote gives you the opportunity to make important judgments for yourself, your community and the future of blacks who should be facing less obstacles. Whites already know how to get the black vote besides coming into our neighborhoods to use other blacks to encourage it.

They also expect to see them grinning with exuberance, standing below the podium listening for assurances affirming hand outs. I must assure you; this isn't about who to vote for, or who I would vote for, it's about the stupidity and the political scam that has existed since blacks were first able to vote.

Regardless of our education, successes, political abilities and so on, we still seem to need someone to keep the horn of plenty filled, since we lack the effort to do it ourselves. So I've spared myself the anxiety that would help to develop an ulcer or heart attack, trying to understand why standing up to be accountable for self is so difficult.

Regardless whose the president, in the senate or congress, no politician will delegate their efforts primarily to the so-called needs of blacks, as though they are the only group that exist in this country. I would think most would have learned by now, especially if they're old enough to remember most of the changes in this country regarding blacks only occurred under some form of duress. If you're determined to control your own destiny, everything else that's important will usually follow.
